(These feelings will take us in the direction we do NOT want to go.)
This message is to some of my family members, friends and many people who visit my blogs and website. A lot of people are expressing that they are feeling fearful, some anxiety, anger and even frustration over the economy and other things that are happening on the world stage. All of these emotions are valid. However, these are the very emotions that will take us in the direction that we do NOT want to go in. After we acknowledge these feelings, it is important that we focus away from them. Continue Reading »

This is a photo of me, Aunt Thelma and my daughters that was taken a few years ago.
Excerpts from the Epilogue of the book, “You Don’t Know Crazy”:
My Aunt Thelma, my mother’s sister, is 95
years young. She was diagnosed with colon cancer
about five years ago. She refused to have surgery and
all other invasive medical treatment. According to all
of her medical documentation, she should have died a
few years ago. However, she still lives alone in the
senior citizen complex, flirts with the roadside vegetable
sellers, can walk faster than I can, and is teaching
me an invaluable lesson about living and dying on
your own terms.
*****
Aunt Thelma passed over on May 4th, 2009. In her final days, she was happy and at peace with the decisions she’d made concerning her health and last days of this incarnation. She also said she was happy to have lived to see a black man be President of the United States. Continue Reading »

In our society we love to say “the children are our future”. Yes, the children are our future. So how do we ensure that the future will be a wonderful and happy experience for all of us. I believe the key is ensuring that we have wonderful and happy children today. Let’s start by honoring the children. Let’s set an example of what that looks and feels like.

Wambui Bahati, a.k.a. John-Ann Washington, shares a powerful, personal and important story about mental illness, self-esteem, self-love and courage. She was born and raised in the segregated south during the 1950s and 1960s and has sprinkled the narrative with significant national historical events, and how they personally effected her life. She invites us in for a behind the scenes look at her years as an actress on Broadway and in national touring shows.
At times hilariously funny and always relentlessly honest,You Don’t Know Crazy presents an intelligent, informative portrayal of bipolar mood disorder and its effects on Bahati’s self-esteem, career, relationships and day-to-day coping. Continue Reading »

With so much going on in our families, our communities and our world, it seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do all we want to do. So, we are tempted to stay awake longer to get more accomplished.
However, sleep is powerful and will surprise us when we think we have it under control. An example of this is when we fall asleep during our child’s dance or piano recital or a movie we were excited about seeing. And, of course, the results are tragic when people fall asleep while driving and cause fatal accidents. Don’t try to fight sleep. Sleep will win every time. Continue Reading »

When I was a child, about eight or nine years old, I remember thinking that thirty years old was really, really old. However, the good news (I thought) was by the time I was thirty, I would know everything there is to know about everything.
Boy! I was wrong on both counts! As I prepare to celebrate my 59th birthday in a few days Continue Reading »

Smile, laugh, and be silly. Don’t take everything too seriously. Life is not a contest. You were born a winner. We can’t stop people from judging us, but we don’t have to be a judge.

A few years ago my daughters invited me to go see a movie with them that I wasn’t sure I wanted to see. But, I went with them and I am so happy that I did because I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was such fun! The name of the movie was Napoleon Dynamite. Now this post or podcast is not about Napoleon Dynamite. I’m not going to talk about the movie. I’m not going to review it. I’m not going to talk about whether you saw it or didn’t see it.
The reason I’m mentioning the movie is because when I woke up this morning and my eyes popped open, I was looking at my ceiling when the thought came to me, “What are you going to do today Wambui?” And I instantly thought “Whatever I feel like I want to do, Gosh!” Continue Reading »
